Seen in HD 25 – THX, Blu-ray stats, Invention of Lying review

This week, Phil loses his ability to remember anything at the end of the show. Luckily, we were able to make it through most of the show before he loses control of cognitive thinking.
We start out with a look at a great article from Anandtech on THX certification on HDTVs. The company started by Lucasfilm to ensure theaters perform to spec evntually branched out into home video and audio. And now that the THX Certified badge is out there, what does it mean? Is a THX Certified HDTV something that …

Seen in HD 23 – Walmart+Vudu, Tivo-SDV, Harry Potter HBP review

Some fairly big news this week, as word broke shortly before recording the show that Walmart had bought online movie service Vudu in what’s being reported as a $100 million deal. This could either be a good thing for Vudu, giving the young company more capital behind it to expand and give Netflix a run for its money, or it could go the way of the Walmart MP3 store and leave thousands of customers out in the cold in the future.
On the TiVo news front, the company that became a …

Entertainment 2.0-Episode 62: Appletainment 2.0. Wait…what?

Even though I promised not to bring it up, Josh forced the issue and we end up spending part of this week’s show talking about Apple’s latest device, the iPad.  While neither Josh nor I can personally see a lot of use for the device when compared to your standard netbook, some people seem to think it’s a great thing.  We at least try to relate it to Media Center as with the right apps, it could make an interesting addition to your digital life.
iPad announcements aside, we talk …

Entertainment 2.0-Episode 61: Handy Manny!

Back once again and trust me folks, the audio quality is much, much better this week.  Skype decided to play along and you won’t have to listen to us sounding like we’re in a tunnel.  Hopefully we won’t have any issues for awhile.
As for the content of the show, well, it was a slow week!  Josh and I take time to discuss using DVBLink to create network tuners and how this my come into play within the Media Center/Extender ecosystem.  Some of our UK listeners have been working hard …

Seen in HD #20 – Buyer Beware, Coraline review

This week on Seen in HD we’ve put Adam in a tin can, or at least it sounds that way. Apologies for the audio quality being less than stellar, tried a new recording format that obviously needs tweaking.
To kick things off on show No. 20, we wrap up some CES loose ends starting with Sharp adding another color to the standard RGB that HDTVs are currently made with. They added a yellow to that spectrum, hoping for improved color accuracy as well as the ability to reproduce even more colors …

Seen in HD #19 – CES Post Mortem, Adventureland Blu-ray

CES is over. The nearly week-long orgy of electronic goodness has come and gone, and we’re here to talk about what piqued our interest, and there’s a lot of it.
What better place to start CES 2010 talk than with 3D. It was hands down the news of the show. HDTVs, Blu-ray, gaming. Everyone got in on the action. Lots to talk about, and too many articles to link to. We remain skeptical. New equipment for everyone is a big ask in an era where HDTV penetration has jumped due to …

Entertainment 2.0: Episode 58-Goodbye ‘09, hello ‘10!

While we recorded this show on the 30th of December, today is January 1st, 2010 so this is technically a decade spanning show!  We hope all of our listeners stick with us through 2010 and beyond and if you’re just getting started with Windows Media Center, we encourage you to keep listening!
This week we take a quick look at 2009 and the things that made Media Center news during the year.  The biggest of course is the release of Windows 7 Media Center with Microsoft’s newest OS.  Sporting a …

Seen in HD 17 – Happy Blu Year: 2009 in review

In the spirit of the new year, this week we look at the best, and the worst, that 2009 had to offer in Blu-ray. We also welcome back Matt Paprocki from DoBlu.com to join our discussion on the best of ‘09.
Before we get to that, we take a look at a few news items.
First up, Walmart has made it very known that they want in on the home theater game. Adding more HDTV displays and its own install team, Walmart is making a major play. And it seems to be …

Seen In HD Episode 16 – Winter TV Preview

This week we take a small break from our regular scheduled programming to welcome back Brent Evens, better know as Geek Tonic, to talk about the Winter 2010 TV Schedule.
You may remember Brent joined us in the fall to look at the 2009 fall schedule. It was so fun, we thought we’d do it again.

We do talk a …

Seen in HD #15 – CableCard: What happened? Star Trek on Blu and more

It’s quiet around here. Too quiet. That’s kind of what it feels like in this post-Black Friday pre-CES month. Not too much news coming out as companies seems to be holding pat until the Vegas show in early January.
Also not much news about Black Friday yet either, a sure sign that it was bleh at best for the CE industry. Blu-ray marketshare for Black Friday week was 12% (only 12% we wonder?) of total packaged media (DVD and Blu-ray) but revenues for that week were a record $69 million.
More signs …
