Finally, a respite from the relative lack of events as the FIFA 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa on Friday. ESPN2 and ABC have coverage all weekend, and the ESPN Networks and ABC will carry the event to its conclusion on July 11. Elsewhere, the Stanley Cup will be decided this week on NBC and the NBA Finals continue on ABC. One note on the World Cup Coverage, ESPN’s site doesn’t indicate HD coverage, but it’s my understanding that all games will be carried in HD. If that’s …

UPDATE – The Stanley Cup Finals start Saturday night on NBC at 8 p.m.
An extra day of coverage this week due to Monday’s Memorial Day Holiday. The Stanley Cup Finals are already half-determined with Chicago’s sweep of San Jose. This week will determine the other half. The NBA Finals will also be set by the end of Memorial Day, if the series go that long. The French Open kicks off Tuesday with 12 noon coverage on ESPN2 all week, picked up by NBC Saturday and Sunday and back to ESPN2 …

The NBA and NHL have both been pared down to four teams each, setting up some interesting semifinal action this week. Other than that it’s Major League Baseball. Things get slower and slower as we more into the summer.

Luckily we have some great international soccer to keep us busy this week. Bayern Munich and Inter Milan square-off in the UEFA Champions League Final Saturday on FOX at 2:30 p.m. Consider this a warm up to the World Cup in June.

I feel asleep at the wheel and posted a day late this week, but you haven’t missed much. It’s a light week overall, baseball, NBA and NHL playoffs pretty much cover it. The second PGA Tour Major of the year on NBC with The Players Championship 2-7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday (1080i).

Cleveland and Boston are locked in what is looking (after two games) to be a pretty good series. Catch game three on Friday (7 p.m. ESPNHD) and Sunday (3:30 p.m. ABC).

UPDATE – I’ve added team names and NHL games to the late-week and weekend schedule.
A big snoozer this week. The Kentucky Derby highlights the weekend’s action. Meanwhile, NBA and NHL playoffs continue during the week. That’s about it. Note that since we’re nearing the end of the first round in both the NHL and NBA, the schedule toward the end of the week is very fluid. Though Vs lists no games after Wednesday, it’s likely they will have coverage as the second round starts later in the week.

It’s the event Detroit Lions fans like me look forward to all year, the NFL Draft. It’s our Super Bowl. This year’s draft is made-for-TV with the first round Thursday night in primetime (8 p.m. ESPN 720p). Elsewhere the NHL playoffs should start wrapping up round one toward the end of the week, the PGA Tour is in New Orleans and the NBA is in the midst of its first round.

ZZZZZZZZZ. That about sums up this first post-NCAA Tournament post-Masters week. A lone MLB game on Monday and a two-game outing on Friday (NHL playoffs) makes this among the slowest weeks in recent memory. To be fair, the NHL and NBA both begin playoffs this week, so the games that are on start to mean something.

Saturday. All day. In a slow week, Saturday tries to salvage things with NHL and NBA playoffs and MLB on FOX.

The 16th hole at The Masters.
Crushed. That’s how I felt Saturday when MSU’s run ended at the last second against Butler. All that aside, the title game will happen Monday night whether I want it to or not (CBS, 9 p.m., 1080i). Monday also features all kinds of baseball as the rest of the league opens play, check out ESPN and ESPN2 (720p) for that action. On the hockey side, the NHL regular season winds down to Sunday’s finale, and the NCAA champ will be decided Saturday night (ESPN, 7 …
