Let’s all take a breath after the excitement of the Olympics, especially the hockey. Don’t think you get a break, however, because this week marks the official start of March Madness. Conference tournaments are starting, league title races decided and jockeying for position in the NCAA tourney is officially underway. Ahh, Spring is in the air.

One thing to note right off the top: With the sheer amount of Olympics coverage, we’re not going to cover every event that will be on TV during the two-week run, head to NBC Olympics.com for that. However, we’ll try to highlight the big ones for the day. Relating to Olympic coverage, the downhill skiing (and Lindsey Vonn, pictured above) schedule is all out of whack due to weather issues. All Olympic Coverage on the NBC networks is in 1080i. I’d check NBC’s site for the most up-to-date plans for …

It’s Super Bowl week. If you’re not a football fan, too bad, because you won’t be able to get away from it. There are still other things going on. The PGA Tour is back on NBC Saturday and Sunday, there’s plenty of quality college hoops all week, and two of the NHL’s best square off on NBC Sunday at 12 noon with Washington and Pittsburgh.

Welcome to football purgatory. It’s the week between an amazing slate of conference title games and the Super Bowl in Miami with Indianapolis and New Orleans. The NFL tried to shake things up by inserting the Pro Bowl into this week, but really, who watches the Pro Bowl? Elsewhere, the Australian Open heats up, and Winter X Games 14 gives us some pre-Olympics snowy sporting goodness on the ESPN networks.

Our first week with no bowl games in a while, but we do get NFL playoffs to keep us warm on Saturday and Sunday (FOX, CBS various times). NBC kicks off its Sunday NHL coverage with Detroit and Chicago at 12:30 p.m. On the college basketball side, lots of ranked teams in action as conference schedules get underway this week. Side note: I’ll be at Saturday’s Illinois-MSU game, look for a guy in green. Also, the U.S. figure skating championships are on NBC this weekend, helping determine our Olympic team. …

Hard to argue with Thursday’s BCS National Championship (8 p.m. ABC 720p). Alabama and Texas will square off for the right to be called the best college team in the country, or at least for the right to be part of the TCU/Boise State should have been in that game argument.

Things are a bit less chaotic this week as college football mostly takes a break until Bowl season starts, though Army Navy (CBS 2:30 p.m.) and the Division II title game (ESPN2 1 p.m.) are both Saturday. Otherwise, there’s some good college hoops to pick from all week long along with the normal NBA/NHL schedules.
