SunBrite unveiling 55 inch all-weather HDTV at CES

There’s been more than one time over the last few years when I wished I had a TV outside.  While it’s easy to move a laptop out there and watch shows as the kids play in the backyard, a full set would be great.  While I’m no closer to owning one due to the fact that it’s out of my price range, SunBrite will be showing off their new 55 inch 5510HD LCD all-weather TV at CES 2010.
While most sets can’t stand the variable temperatures, dirt, bugs and other …

DirecTV continues to lead in HD, possibly 3D with new satellite

Already sporting 130 HD offerings, it doesn’t appear that DirecTV is slowing down any time soon.  The company recently placed “DirecTV 12” into orbit.  When the KU-band bird goes active in early 2010, it’ll join the company’s four other HD satellites which serve the US market.
“With the successful launch of our DirecTV 12 satellite, we will have the capacity to dramatically expand HD and movie choices for our customers and further extend our content and technology leadership,” DirecTV chief technology officer Romulo Pontual said in a statement.
While the company …

California goes Nanny State and imposes TV energy curbs

Saying that they hope they will lead the nation on the environmental issue, California’s Energy Commission recently voted unanimously to force TV manufacturers to meet new lower power usage standards in order to be able to sell their products within the state.
The standards will be placed on sets up to 48 inches and will be phased in starting in 2011.  At that time, sets sold in CA stores will have to use less that 183 watts.  In 2013 that number drops to 116 watts.  Currently sets can use anywhere …

Panasonic Pres Says 3-4 Years for 3D Penetration

I’m going to create a new category here on The DMZ.  It’ll be called “I’m Sick of Hearing About 3D” and it’s where stories like this one will go.  Most people are just now jumping to HDTV and CE companies and content producers now want us to run out and buy a brand new HDTV so we can all sit in our living rooms wearing glasses all night.
Panasonic’s president is saying that real 3D penetration is going to take at least 3 to 4 years.  Personally, it could take …

Gov’t May Fund Digital TV Repeaters

If you live in a large city or within about 50 miles of a broadcast tower, you probably already know that you can receive digital and HD content OTA for free with the right antenna and tuner.  But what do you do if you live out where I do?  I’m 75 miles from the closest tower which means because of the mountains in the region, I’m boned.  I have no choice but to pay for cable because the digital signals simply won’t reach this far.
It looks like the government …

MoCA Coax Ethernet Adapter

Do you have an older home that makes it nearly impossible to run Ethernet cable to your home entertainment center, or into a home office where you already have coax ran? In one way, shape, or form I think we all have been there. A few years ago some companies formed MoCA, Multimedia over Coax Alliance which focused on using coax cable as a transmission medium to send data from one end to the other.
The goal of the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA for short), is to facilitate home …
