Celebrate! The college football season is upon us. Everything else takes a backseat this weekend to ivy-covered walls and pigskin perfection.

Two games stand out. Monday night at 8 p.m. on ESPN Boise St. travels to Virginia Tech and 3:30 p.m. Saturday when Notre Dame hosts Purdue on NBC.
Here’s the rest of the week, big games in BOLD.

Take the first part of the week off, because it’s pretty lame. Save for a couple baseball games on Wednesday, you don’t have anything to pick from until Friday. The Little League World Series dominates the listings this weekend on the ESPN family. The NFL preseason continues as well.
SPOTLIGHT
Hard to say because I refuse to list a preseason game as the spotlight anymore. I’d check out the baseball action, specifically Sunday night’s Angels at Minnesota matchup at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Thank GOODNESS for football’s return. It looks pretty bleak otherwise. We get treated to some nice international friendly soccer Tuesday, but there’s a chance it might be in SD (though I can’t see why since it’s being played at the home of the New York Jets/Giants). The PGA’s final major is this weekend on CBS as well. One note, it didn’t make it into the listings but there is coverage of the Little League World Series Regional Finals all week on the ESPN networks and ESPN3. This is NOT the …

Zzzzzzzzzz. There’s some baseball, a bit of MLS soccer and some golf. Have fun. Oh, and crazy people riding skateboards and BMX bikes.

Don’t let the sheer amount of games in the schedule fool you. If you take away the Tour de France, it’s a bleak week for sports. The British Open is there to ease us into the hardest part of the summer, when baseball is really the only remaining major sport. Monday night is one of the few nights of the year when none of the big four have a game scheduled. With the World Cup done (wither Oranje!!), it’s time to start looking for alternate entertainment means, especially if you’re …

Sadly, the US went out in the first round of the knockout stage at the World Cup. That leaves a pretty big hole in the July 4 week viewing. Not that the World Cup stops there, my adopted team – The Dutch – are still in it. This week we’ll get to the quarterfinals of the event. Elsewhere, Wimbledon comes to a close Sunday morning on NBC after a week of action on ESPN and NBC. The 2010 Tour de France almost takes over Versus starting Saturday. Happy 4th!

UPDATE: Added the teams for the round of 16 games for World Cup on Saturday-Monday.
For the first time since last September, we have a HD Sportsman with no NBA or NHL on the schedule. Luckily we have the World Cup and Wimbledon to keep us company for the next couple weeks. The Beautiful Game will enter the round of 16 Saturday, with the USA playing at 2:30 p.m. Saturday or 10 a.m. Sunday, assuming it advances. ESPN2 has Wimbledon covered all week, with NBC picking things up on Saturday. Lots …

A big week for FIFA World Cup action, three games on each day of the week. But that’s not all, the PGA Tour’s greatest challenge starts Thursday with the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Finally, the NBA Finals will wrap up this week, either with a Boston win on Tuesday (ABC 9 p.m.) or Thursday in a up-for-grabs game 7 (ABC 9 p.m.). We’ve also added Monday’s early-morning World Cup action to make sure you’re totally covered.

Finally, a respite from the relative lack of events as the FIFA 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa on Friday. ESPN2 and ABC have coverage all weekend, and the ESPN Networks and ABC will carry the event to its conclusion on July 11. Elsewhere, the Stanley Cup will be decided this week on NBC and the NBA Finals continue on ABC. One note on the World Cup Coverage, ESPN’s site doesn’t indicate HD coverage, but it’s my understanding that all games will be carried in HD. If that’s …

Wow is it light this week. Two events Tuesday, one event both Thursday and Friday. The NBA Finals and Stanley Cup finals are both in play, and the Belmont Stakes are Saturday. That’s about it.

NBC has the French Open finals Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 a.m. (1080i).
