Entertainment 2.0-Episode 68: FINALLY!!!!!

First we want to apologize to those who join us live every week.  When we’re going to be having multiple people on with us, it helps to cut out the live stuff to conserve bandwidth.  Unfortunately it didn’t help much this week due to software errors.  But while the audio quality isn’t going to be what you’re used to, the content is superb.
Josh and I are joined this week by Jose Ortiz of the TDL Mobile Show and AJ Peck, writer and sometimes co-host for The Home Server …

Poll: HTPC vs. Extender

Yesterday Ben Drawbaugh and I got into it a little back and forth on Twitter about the HTPC and using it as a HTPC directly connected to your display. Whether that is your tv, your projector or some other display medium or in the case of Ben using your HTPC more as a server in a closet up and out of the way basically running as a headless unit serving up extenders.
Back in July Ben and myself joined Josh (the other Josh) and Adam on Entertainment 2.0 Episode 37 part …

New iPhone/iPod Touch Media Center App Approved

If you’re one of the millions of iPhone or iPod Touch users out there who also happens to use Windows Media Center at home, your life just may have gotten a bit easier.
Kumatek announced earlier this week that Apple has approved the Ncontrol app for their touch devices.  Ncontrol will allow you to use your iPhone or Touch as a remote control for your Media Center as well as extenders.
Not being an iPhone or iPod Touch owner, I can’t say how well the app works but it’s nice to …

Review: Casa Tunes Multi-Zone Audio with Media Center

For years I have been slowly building up a multi-zone audio system in my home. The first system I had was based off of my Yamaha AV receiver that had a second zone output, to which I used to feed speakers in my garage. Later on I expanded that to also feed audio into my kitchen/living room area, but was still only based off of two audio sources so the garage and living room still only played the same audio. In those early days I really only had three audio …

Entertainment 2.0: Episode 37-PC vs. Extender: Part 1

You read that title right.  This week is the first half or so of a two part episode.  We had so much fun with our guests Josh Shenkle and Ben Drawbaugh that we ended up going for over two hours.  This week we talk about the PC vs. Extender models for running Media Center and all of the things that factor in to making a decision on how to run your setup.  In this first of two parts, we talk about the PC side of the argument and some …

Windows 7 Xbox Extenders Go Dark

I’ve been hit and I have no doubt at all that there are those reading this who are wondering what is going on.  Microsoft has decided to take Xbox Live down for maintenance for up to 24 hours.  While this is normally just a minor inconvenience, if you’re running Windows 7, you no have no access to Media Center.
The Windows 7 beta and the release candidate require your Xbox 360 extender to have a connection to Xbox Live.  I have to assume this is due to Microsoft wanting to …

Did Microsoft Answer Media Center Users Prayers?

It appears that some Media Center users might finally get their wish.  Yesterday, Richard Miller, Microsoft Media Center MVP, tweeted that there was an interesting thread on The Green Button discussing DVD vob files and streaming to extenders.
After taking a look, I decided it would be a good idea to give this a try.  Media Center users have been clamoring to be able to stream DVD files to extenders for as long as there’s been Media Center and this ability seems to have finally been granted.
I was able to …

Extenders and Where We Go Next

So by now most people have heard that Linksys has discontinued their DMA Media Center extender product line.  Myself and several others contacted the company and learned that they have no intention of releasing a new extender either.  This coupled with the fact that HP discontinued the HP Media Smart line well over a month ago has a lot of people wondering where Media Center users are going to do from here on out since the only extenders left are the D-Link DSM-750 and the Xbox 360.  There’s a …

Linksys Discontinues Media Center Extenders

I found a post in the forums on The Green Button today stating that Linksys has discontinued the DMA-21/2200 line of Media Center extenders.  The post had links included to the Linksys website which did indeed show that both products were listed as no longer being sold.
Not wanting to take a forum post or even the Linksys website at face value, I placed a call to the sales customer service line.  It turns out that yes indeed, Linksys has stopped production on the extenders.  I’m not sure where this …
