Apple Announces Apple TV v2.

The big fall apple event has just wrapped up and while most of the stuff out of Cupertino isn’t related to The DMZ, Mr. Jobs did take time to announce the company’s second version of Apple TV.
It’s small, that’s for sure.  Looks to fit in the palm of your hand.  Connection-wise the device will come with HDMI, USB, Ethernet and Optical audio connections.  Wireless N will also be built in so wiring won’t be a problem.
You won’t be able to store anything on the device itself however you will …

How Hulu Made Ditching Hulu Plus Easy

I’m a bit of a content junky and a big supporter of online streaming content.  I see it as a path to full on IPTV and I enjoy having a ton of content on demand at all times.  The freedom to watch what you want, when you want is great.
This is the whole reason I was happy when I received my Hulu Plus invite a little over two weeks ago.  Getting a chance to try out the paid service was something I was hoping for.  I had hammered it a …

HTPCentric 06: The Future of Content Acquisition

Do you stream, record or watch live?  No matter how you consume your content, most of us can agree that the landscape is changing in regards to how content is pushed to our homes.  Streaming is becoming more prevalent.  More devices support it and as bandwidth penetration continues to grow, more people are turning to the internet for their TV.  How long will it be until we’re all consuming TV through the internet and will that full transition ever happen?
That’s what Ben Drawbaugh and Andrew Van Til are here to …

Cutting the Cord or How to Live Without Cable

We used to have the full deal.  Digital Cable and all the trimmings.  HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, you name it.  Slowly, over the years we’ve cut back.  This was mainly because we realized that we simply didn’t use the services we were paying for.  We’re a movie family for sure, but we had already seen everything that was hitting the big movie networks.  Kinda pointless to pay for something you’ve already seen and have no interest in seeing again.
When we moved to northern New York, we started out on Dish Network.  …

Got a Question for the Cable TV Industry?

We’ve all talked about the things that we love and hate about the cable television industry. We love the content. We love HD video. We love high speed internet. We don’t like high prices, and limited options. So what if you had the opportunity to sit down with someone from a big cable TV company? What would you ask them? Maybe you’re curious about switched digital video, or ala carte pricing. Maybe you want to know why they selected a terrible DVR that you’ve been stuck with for years. What would …

The Movie Podcast: May 4th, 2010

We’re back again and trying to muscle our way through the absolute plethora of Hollywood dreck that is being released this week.  There are some really great catalog titles hitting today but some of the things we subjected ourselves to for the sake of the show just shouldn’t be legal.  As always though, that’s why we’re here.  We suffer so you don’t have to.
The Blu-ray releases actually start off really strongly this week with Saving Private Ryan.  This is one that everyone should immediately add to their collection.  James …

My Movies 3 iPhone app now available

On Saturday I received the latest newsletter from My Movies 3 creator Brian Binnerup and there was some great news included for iPhone and iPod Touch users.  My Movies now has it’s own iPhone app which will allow you to not only view your collection on your device but add to it as well.  Never again be at the store and wonder whether or not you already bought ‘Space Jam’!
You’ll find all the relevant screenshots here but I can tell you from using the app for the …

The DMZ Media Minute Returns-Week of March 22nd, 2010

While it’s been quite awhile since we’ve covered the weekly digital media releases, I thought it was time to bring back The DMZ Media Minute.  Each week you’ll get a three to five minute podcast detailing the upcoming week’s Blu-ray, DVD and music releases.
While most weeks, you can have trouble deciding what new release to grab, this one is pretty easy.  There just isn’t anything that interesting in the movie area this week other than Toy Story 1 and 2 hitting Blu-ray.  Pixar’s stuff usually looks great in HD …

MPAA virtually guarantees that you’ll rip your DVDs illegally

RealDVD should have been lauded by the movie and television studios as a great step forward.  Software that allowed consumers to copy their legally purchased DVDs while not only maintaining copy protection but adding an extra layer to be sure that the files created couldn’t be shared.  If just one executive in Hollywood had even an ounce of foresight, they would have tried to form a formal partnership with RealNetworks.  Instead, the studios and the MPAA have ensured that millions of content buyers will continue to do things illegally …

Entertainment 2.0-Episode 52: Stop Yer Whinin’!

Oh do we have fun this week!  After moving through a ton of reader email and comments (THANK YOU!), Josh and Adam get into the question of fair use and recorded TV.  How long should you be allowed to keep your recordings?  Can you archive them forever or are you obligated to buy the DVD series once it’s available?  We try to focus on these questions this week.  (Notice I said we try.  We stray a bit!)
We had some great emails and comments this week and you’ll find links …
