Happy New Year. A great week of football greets us for the first HD Sportsman of 2010. The BCS National Championship, a pair of unbeatens in the Fiesta Bowl and Wild-card weekend in the NFL.

Hard to argue with Thursday’s BCS National Championship (8 p.m. ABC 720p). Alabama and Texas will square off for the right to be called the best college team in the country, or at least for the right to be part of the TCU/Boise State should have been in that game argument.

Slow going early in the week, Thursday’s action consists only of an NBA doubleheader on TNT. Things pick up over the weekend, however, as we get our first trio of bowl games, all on ESPN.

Despite the trio of city-named bowl games this weekend, the No. 10 North Carolina and No. 2 Texas matchup in college basketball on Saturday (2 p.m. ESPN) is too good to pass up.

Things are a bit less chaotic this week as college football mostly takes a break until Bowl season starts, though Army Navy (CBS 2:30 p.m.) and the Division II title game (ESPN2 1 p.m.) are both Saturday. Otherwise, there’s some good college hoops to pick from all week long along with the normal NBA/NHL schedules.

An extra-large helping of sports for an extra-large week. Happy Thanksgiving, not only can you feast all day Thursday, you can feast on sports all week long. This is by far the busiest week we’ve seen since the NCAA Basketball Tournament’s opening week. College basketball tournaments make up most of the schedule, but the NBA, NHL, NFL and college football make multiple appearances as well.

It’s football overload this weekend. Sunday’s NASCAR race on ABC at 3 p.m. is the only non-pigskin national sporting event on TV this Saturday and Sunday. The college football regualar season is nearing an end, and conference title races are heating up. In the NFL, one of the great rivalries today is renewed when New England heads to Indianapolis Sunday night on NBC.

Football frenzy starts early this week as college games start on Tuesday when Ohio heads to Buffalo for a MAC showdown on ESPN2. In the NBA, there’s a couple conference finals rematches, and Friday night, college basketball kicks off across the country. ESPNU has the Morehead State at Kentucky game at 6:30 p.m. Note: Had a big weekend of kids birthdays so we’re a bit late starting this week.

The Yankees have a commanding 3-1 lead in the World Series and could wrap up their 27th title Monday night in Philadelphia (7:57 p.m. FOX). TNT and ESPN have NBA action starting Wednesday night, highlighted by Cleveland’s trip to New York on Friday (8 p.m. EPSN). Finally, college football on the ESPN networks along with MLS playoffs.
