Best Buy and CinemaNow announced a wide-reaching partnership this week, but so far there’s more questions than answers about how the service will work and just how wide the reach will be.

It seems that every company on the planet that has anything to do with Hollywood or even Indie produced movies is looking to let people watch everything they could think of on the TV.  Sonic Solutions, parent company of Roxio and CinemaNow are the latest to jump in.

Sonic, parent company of CinemaNow, just keeps popping up in the news.  The company has now partnered with Widevine to provide Hollywood movies via flash media drives.  The self-contained CinemaNow USB Movie Drives(TM) will include an integrated media player as well as the necessary video codecs to enable instant high-quality PC playback of movie content offline.  Widevine is providing Hollywood approved DRM to secure the drives.

Sonic, the parent company of Roxio and the CinemaNow streaming service today announced that they are providing the tools necessary to provide a full 3D experience in the home.  The company is teaming with Nvidia to optimize content from CinemaNow for playback on GeForce GPUs and to provide support for Nvidia 3D Vision and 3D Vision-ready displays such as the Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ and ViewSonic FuHzion VX2265wm currently in the market for 3D gaming.

Consumers can now digitally stream movies from CinemaNow on Blu-ray Disc players from LG Electronics, the companies announced yesterday.  Previewed at the CES in January, the LG Network Blu-ray Disc Players (models BD370 and BD390) and LG Network Home Theater Systems (models LHB953 and LHB977) are the first to incorporate the Roxio CinemaNow Service. It’s starting to seem like my 4 port router and 8 port switch won’t be enough to connect all of the devices hitting the market this year.  Between Yahoo Widget TVs, PCs, servers, and blu-ray players, we’ll have to install rack mounted hardware soon.

Qflix was introduced at CES earlier this year.  When a feed item crossed my PC this morning, it looked interesting.  QFlix DVD players allow you to download movies from CinamaNow and burn them to disk.  These are now being offered as options in certain Dell PCs for $20.  As I started to read more about how this system works, I realized that this is not how to allow people to legally copy movies.  At least not how to make money at it.
