Seen in HD 25 – THX, Blu-ray stats, Invention of Lying review

This week, Phil loses his ability to remember anything at the end of the show. Luckily, we were able to make it through most of the show before he loses control of cognitive thinking.
We start out with a look at a great article from Anandtech on THX certification on HDTVs. The company started by Lucasfilm to ensure theaters perform to spec evntually branched out into home video and audio. And now that the THX Certified badge is out there, what does it mean? Is a THX Certified HDTV something that …

DVD and Blu-ray to Media Center – One man’s journey

There are many methods for getting content from optical discs into Media Center. Some are more complicated than others, some are more reliable. There’s even been previous posts on this site about this same topic. This is a story about my attempts, and what I found worked and didn’t work. I’m going to write it in a way that I hope will make it easy to follow.
Couple things to lead off with: First, this is not the only method, just the one that worked for me. Second, it’s not perfect, …

Seen in HD 23 – Walmart+Vudu, Tivo-SDV, Harry Potter HBP review

Some fairly big news this week, as word broke shortly before recording the show that Walmart had bought online movie service Vudu in what’s being reported as a $100 million deal. This could either be a good thing for Vudu, giving the young company more capital behind it to expand and give Netflix a run for its money, or it could go the way of the Walmart MP3 store and leave thousands of customers out in the cold in the future.
On the TiVo news front, the company that became a …

Seen in HD 22 – Olympics, Sleeping Beauty review and more

After the flu canceled last week’s show, Seen in HD is back for episode 22. We start things off with a quick discussion on Windows Phone 7 and its potential as a HD video player since it has a lot of similarities to the Zune HD. More info needs to come out on the video playbacks features, but Phil was particularly intrigued.
After that we shift to talk of media streamers/extenders and their worth after the announcement of Toshiba’s Media Center TV (no it has nothing to do with Windows Media …

Seen in HD/HD Sportsman in brief

The flu has taken its toll on Seen in HD and The HD Sportsman this week, so here’s a brief look at both.
HD Sportsman –
The highlight is of course the Winter Olymics starting Friday at 7:30 p.m. on NBC and running for the better part of the next two weeks. In lieu of trying to show everything that’s being covered (I believe more than 1,000 hours this year?), we’ll highlight the big games as they come up. Basically, all NBC networks will be Olympics for the next two weeks.

Seen in HD 21 – OLED dreams, iPad-HD or not? and Inglorious Basterds review

Back after a week of silence, we’re primed and ready to go. We start off with a look at Mitsubishi’s 149″ OLED display. But before you get excited, this is more an example of how far off general market OLED is than it is anything else. The screen is made up of smaller 10cm panels stitched together and only reaches 1088×640 resolution (so not HD).
We go back to High Def Digest for our next story, too. Amazon accidentally outed pricing on three of Samsung’s four new BD players for 2010. …

Seen in HD – The “No Audio” Episode, The Hurt Locker review

Where last week it sounded like Adam was in a tin can, this week you won’t have to hear either of us ramble on. As happens every once in a while, real life gets in the way of fun things like podcasts, so this week we’re taking a break from the podcast and instead present to you the first-ever Seen in HD lettercast (is that a word?)
On the news front, Oppo has revealed plans for an even less expensive entry-level Blu-ray player, the BDP-80. It shares many of the same …

Seen in HD #20 – Buyer Beware, Coraline review

This week on Seen in HD we’ve put Adam in a tin can, or at least it sounds that way. Apologies for the audio quality being less than stellar, tried a new recording format that obviously needs tweaking.
To kick things off on show No. 20, we wrap up some CES loose ends starting with Sharp adding another color to the standard RGB that HDTVs are currently made with. They added a yellow to that spectrum, hoping for improved color accuracy as well as the ability to reproduce even more colors …

Seen in HD #19 – CES Post Mortem, Adventureland Blu-ray

CES is over. The nearly week-long orgy of electronic goodness has come and gone, and we’re here to talk about what piqued our interest, and there’s a lot of it.
What better place to start CES 2010 talk than with 3D. It was hands down the news of the show. HDTVs, Blu-ray, gaming. Everyone got in on the action. Lots to talk about, and too many articles to link to. We remain skeptical. New equipment for everyone is a big ask in an era where HDTV penetration has jumped due to …

Seen in HD 18 – CES, District 9 and more

Show 18 comes just as the CES news started to trickle out, and we’re talking about it.
Tivo accidentally leaked news about a new product by slipping the wrong instructions sheet into one of its products. One problem, it went to a tech blogger who posted it to his Web site. Nothing too exciting, looks to be a new form factor, but funny nonetheless.
Something that could be a big deal, using a bunch of science and math terms, it looks like Sony and Panasonic have come up with a way to …
