There hasn’t been a whole lot of news hitting in the last few weeks.  Between holidays here in the US and (I believe) companies holding back information for CES in January, things are slow in December.  We’re putting together some great shows for the end of the year however, so be sure to join us over the next few weeks as we wrap up 2009 in style.

  • Adam: Pertaining to the funky resolutions for your tv and Nvidia. It is NOT an Nvidia or Microsoft issue. We first need to look at the issue, which is overscan, all tv's have over scan. So if you have your resolution (desktop resolution) set to 1280 x 720 and all four sides of your desktop are off the screen that is because your tv has overscan built into it.

    Go back to episode 37 part1 and part2 the extenders vs pc's and Ben and I were talking about overscan. All tv's have it, however some tv's have the ability to turn if off so that you don't need to compensate for it.

    My first HDTV, Sony rear projection LCD had over scan and I spent months trying to fix it, first with tools like powerstrip, then the custom resolution utility built into the ATI and Nvidia drivers.

    My Sony LCD was also a weird tv in that is was a 1366 x 768 resolution. The problem was that the tv didn't allow you to input a 1366 x 768 resolution via HDMI. I could ONLY send the tv a 1280 x 720 and then the tv's video chip would resize the 1280 x 720 to the 1366 x 768 resolution.

    I then had to use the nvidia overscan utility to compensate for the change and to get rid of overscan, the problem with that solution however is that I no longer got 1:1 pixel mapping.

    So Josh, yes some Plasma's as you were talking about, most early 720p plasma were 1024 x 768 plasmas and had rectangular pixels, and same as my 1366 x 768 tv, is that these plasmas also only accepted a 1280 x 720 resolution in and the video chip in the tv scaled it to the native resolution of the tv.

    In the end the reason you get a funky (under 1280 x 720) resolution, it is because A.) your tv isn't a native 1280 x 720 resolution, B.) your tv can't turn off overscan C.) your tv doesn't accept a resolution other than 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080.

    Finally the Nvidia tool is doing what we call a "resolution within a resolution" so it is still sending your tv a 1280 x 720 video, but internally to that video feed is scaling it down so that it compensates for overscan.

    Another topic Recorded TV sharing. One thing you guys didn't mention is Homegroup. IF both your pc's are running win7, you can setup homegroup, and once its setup you don't need to do the folder sharing homegroup will automatically setup shared recorded tv from one pc to the other and visa versa.

    so say you have two pc's PC A, and PC B. You record shows 1, 2 and 3 on PC A, and record shows 4, 5 and 6 on PC B. The recorded shows when you have homegroup setup, will have shows 1, 2 and 3 in the recorded tv section of media center on PC B, and shows 4, 5, and 6 will be in the recorded tv section of PC A. Pretty slick and easy to do with homegroup.
