Entertainment 2.0-Episode 45: CEDIA 2009 Part 1

Print No folks, we haven’t split this week’s episode.  We just figure there’s enough info to share that we’ll be spending Episode 46 talking about all of the CEDIA developments as well.  Not only that but as of this episode, we’ve only heard from Microsoft and none of the partners so hopefully, we’ll have even more next week!

For this episode we’re joined by Richard Green, a long time Media Center user, and Josh Shenkle, contributor to The DMZ and regular guest, to go through some of the things we’ve already heard from Microsoft.  This year it’s all about Cablecard and getting high quality, premium HD content into Media Center.  You can read some of the announcements on The DMZ including the announcements that SDV support is coming as well as the fact that the OEM restriction for Cablecard tuners has been lifted.  Great news for those of us like myself who are unwilling to use a hack to get that great HD content.  We also discuss what the upcoming relaxed DRM restrictions mean to MCE users.

Thanks to everyone who left comments and voicemails.  We used a random number generator to pick our winner and murphyr64, who left a comment and a voicemail is our big winner!  He’ll be receiving a DSM-750 extender courtesy of D-Link.  Congratulations to him!

Keep the comments and VOICEMAILS coming!  We enjoyed putting voices with some of our listeners and we want to hear more.  If you have a question or comment you’re always welcome to leave it below but consider calling our toll-free number and we’ll get you on the show!  (1-877-856-4933)

Don’t forget to follow us and our guests on twitter!  It really is the best way to keep up on what is going on here on The DMZ and with Entertainment 2.0!

  • Richard, don't apologize for a single thing you've said, its what we're all thinking and all wish for Media Center. Especially those of us who understand (in varying degrees) whats going on under the hood and behind the scenes, know exactly what you're saying.

  • I agree no apology neccessary the commentary was excellent!

So many things to chew on these last couple of days but I am still eagerly waiting on more news on the one box solution. This podcast was informative and entertaining.

  • Love the show guys keep it,

I love media center but I think you guys are way off on Media Center going main stream. For media center to go main stream at least two things have to happen.

Media Center has to get a killer app. Something that is so awesome, such a great value add that even grandma would want it. That feature also must be exclusive. It does media center no good if it has some awesome feature you can also get on a $5 box from your cable provider.

Using Media Center to view media(Pics/Vids) just isn't that special anymore. Their are way to many $100 boxes that do that.

If I sit 10 people down and show them Media Center's DVR versus any other DVR in the market I would bet 9/10 would pick Media Center. If I then ask asked how many would pay 500+ over your cable provider how many would say they would still want it?

Media Center is still the best DVR on the market but none of its features are game changers to the average joe. Even if it does get some awesome new exclusive feature the price would have to be cheap. Customers have proven that they are content with crappy cable boxes. Also in a world where Rent-A-Center can charge $10 a month for 4 years for a $100 TV most people don't care about long term value..

We care about all of that stuff but we are all HTPC nerds! 🙂
